NEC implements new Automated Fingerprint Identification System for the Philippine National Police

Quezon City, Tokyo and Hong Kong – July 22, 2015 – NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced that NEC Philippines has implemented a new Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Manila.
The AFIS is a biometrics system for automated fingerprint identification that consists of a database of fingerprint records used for criminal identification purposes. As part of assisting law enforcement, the AFIS enables sets of fingerprints recovered from crime scenes to be compared and matched against a database of known and unknown fingerprints.
The new AFIS provides 3 times faster search capabilities to identify crime suspects when compared to the previous system, while providing 5 times more storage capacity for storing fingerprint records. The new system will also be able to connect with other compatible AFIS locally or abroad, with export and import capabilities.

The new AFIS is part of PNP’s Crime Laboratory Modernization Programme and plays a key role in the PNP Patrol Plan Vision of achieving a ‘Highly Capable, Effective and Credible Police Service by 2030’.
NEC ranked first in the Fingerprint Vendor Technology Evaluation (FpVTE 2012 or FpVTE) conducted by the United States’ National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which assessed the current capabilities of fingerprint matching algorithms. The fingerprint database used in the testing included around 5 million sets of fingerprint data, the largest database in the NIST’s benchmark testing history. NEC achieved top ranking in the 10 finger identification tests, producing the best fingerprint matching results among the 18 companies and organizations that took part in the testing.
